Northwood Stud

Darley Stud - Northwood

Northwood Park is a 445 hectare thoroughbred farm bordering the Goulburn River in North Eastern Victoria. The project provided the opportunity to utilise all accrued knowledge of Equine Farm Planning and Equestrian building to produce an internationally acknowledged development for the thoroughbred breeding providing safe management for horses by:

• Identifying natural land units for stallions, on site dry and foaling mares, visiting mares, visiting mares, weanling and yearlings harmoniously combined, with clearly defined safe paths of stock movement.

• A sensitive overlay of competing land, being cognisant of site topography, vegetation, hydrology, traffic movement and land carrying capacity as identified in the Equine Master Plan.

The buildings respond principally to interrelated functions providing best practice stud farm architecture with particular awareness of the fragility of space between buildings and their setting to provide:

• Natural air flow through site orientation
• Volumetric ventilation through convection flue design
• Thermal massed roofing elements
• Natural day light by translucent solar penetration
• Louver system blinds to direct air flow and assist sun shading
• Cushioned underfoot flooring
